Leads Europe in Innovation According to EIU-Cisco Study
NEW YORK, May 22 --Switzerland is EuropeÕs
most innovative nation and second in the world after Japan according to Innovation:
Transforming the way business creates, a new report from the Economist
Intelligence Unit sponsored by Cisco, reports Mario Brossi of the Swiss Foreign
Investment Agency Location: Switzerland. Sweden and the US came in third and
forth on an EIU ranking of 82 economies based on their level of innovation in
2002-06. According to the report,
the top four will maintain their positions through 2011, Mr. Brossi said.
The aims of the study were to analyze the
importance of innovation, then determine which countries innovate the best and
why. To achieve this, the Economist Intelligence Unit compiled the ranking and
also conducted a survey of 485 senior executives worldwide on their opinions
regarding innovation. www.eiu.com/Innovation
ÒLacking
natural resources save hydro power, but rich in educational resources and brain
power, much of SwitzerlandÕs economic success is based on intellectual
property,Ó Mr. Brossi said. ÒThe country boasts the most scientific Nobel
laureates par capita, ranks first in patents per 100,000 inhabitants and enjoys
one of the highest publication citation rates in the world. It also is a leader in PhD graduates in
sciences and engineering per thousand inhabitants aged between 25 and 34 years. These are among reasons why leading
firms in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical technology, information
technology and computer sciences set up their research labs in Switzerland.Ó
