Six other countries evaluated in search process
Sigma-Aldrich has added a cGMP kilo laboratory to its biochemical and organic chemical products operations based in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. It is the most recent piece of a long-term development plan that included a 2400 square meter R&D center opened in 2003 with a staff of 60 scientists.
Herbert Vuilleumier, President of Sigma-Aldrich's Fluka Chemical subsidiary in Switzerland, said that the company first invested in Switzerland in 1989 with the acquisition of the Fluka AG operations in Buchs. "Since that time the company has invested more than $100 million in technology upgrades," he said. "Staffing at the expanded location will number some 475 by year-end 2004."
Based in Missouri, Sigma-Aldrich produces products used in scientific and genomic research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical development, diagnostics, and chemical manufacturing. 07/04
